Thomas, the photographer behind Nine16, holding a camera reflected in an ornate mirrored door

I've been into photography since I was a teenager, long before Nine16 or weddings. I love art, especially the old masters, and when I'm not shooting weddings I'm usually somewhere else in the world with a camera, shooting street photography: real people, real moments, nothing staged. That work has been featured in All About Photo, and on pages including Artist Close-Up, Street Meet Up and Street Photography International.

Nine16 is that same instinct, pointed at weddings. I turn up early, stay low key, and shoot the day as it actually happens, from the morning nerves to the dance floor at 11pm when nobody's posing for anything. No rigid shot lists, no forced smiles held for the camera. Just the day, as it is.

I'm based in the Illawarra and shoot weddings from Wollongong down through the South Coast NSW, including Kiama, Berry, Shoalhaven, Jervis Bay and Ulladulla, and I'll happily travel further for the right day.

Let's talk about your day

Behind the scenes

And this is Karen.

I'm the one you'll hear from while Thomas is out shooting. From your very first email through to the morning of the wedding, I'm the one answering your questions, keeping track of the details, and making sure nothing quietly slips through the cracks while everything else is going on.

My background is in Human Resources and I hold a Masters in it, which is a formal way of saying I've spent my career working with people, and that I actually enjoy it. It means I'll remember what you told me last time without you having to repeat it. I'll chase the thing you're waiting on before you need to ask twice. And if something isn't right, I'd rather hear about it early and fix it properly than smooth it over.

You'll have plenty of other things to organise, and I won't pretend to be across any of them. What I can promise is that the photography side won't be one of them: timings sorted, questions answered, and everything ready well before the day so it's one less thing on your list. Good enough has never sat right with me, and it won't be what you get.

What we stand for

Four things we don't budge on.

Nothing staged.

If it's staged, it's not the story. We photograph what actually happened, not a version of it arranged for the camera.

Real colour, real light.

No heavy presets, no filter that makes every wedding look like every other wedding. Your day should look like your day, in the light it actually had.

Present, but not in the way.

We turn up early, stay low key, and keep out of the middle of things. The best frames come from people forgetting we're there.

Your day, not a template.

No two weddings run the same way, so there's no fixed shot list. We follow the day you're actually having.

Curious how the day actually runs?

See how it goes, start to finish.
